Some cargo will never go through a container door, it has to come in from above. Open top containers replace the solid roof with a removable tarpaulin over steel bows, and add a swing-out door header, so a crane can lower machinery, timber, glass or scrap straight down into the box. Once loaded, the tarpaulin seals the cargo under cover and the container ships as normal.
